Lawd Summer is here and it has not come to play! Those wonderful rays of sunshine are known to wreak crazy havoc on our skin. Spending time outdoors, between perspiring and excessive sun our skin can get beat up leading to breakouts, wrinkles, rashes and hyperpigmentation.
OUR SKIN NEEDS A DIFFERENT KIND OF LOVE IN THE SUMMER THAN IN THE WINTER.
During the winter months our skin is typically drier and cellular turnover slows down which is why it appears to be dull, dry and flaky. While, in these summer months, depending on your region, our skin tends to produce more oil which puts us at a higher risk of accumulating dead skin cells that clog pores leading to more acne breakouts.
So, what should you do?
Ignore the myth that because of our melanin, people of color don’t need sunscreen. We are just as much at risk for developing skin cancer. So, please protect all that gorgeous melanin beauty. Just be sure to use a minimum of SPF 30. No need to go over SPF 50 though.
Our skin struggles to keep hydrated during these months. Along with consuming approximately half our body weight in water, be sure to incorporate skincare products high in aloe, hyaluronic acid and glycerin which are moisture retaining ingredients. A good facial mist is perfect. For a great skin treat, store it in the fridge for a cool pick me up.
To stay ahead of the game and keep our oil production under control use a cleanser that contains natural salicylic acid like White Willow Bark. This helps break down the dirt and grime that builds up in our pores and manage the oils. A great cleanser is the #1 key to a successful summer regimen girl.
Antioxidants key role is to protect our skin from environmental stressors like UV rays and pollution. These factors speed up our aging process by destroying the collagen and elastin in our skin. A great serum loaded with green teas, vitamins C and E are bae, not only during the summer but all year round.
Exfoliating serves two main purposes in our routine, help keep our pores clear of built up dirt and grime and speeds up the cellular turnover to reveal healthy glowing skin. Aside from reducing the appearance of pores, exfoliating is important in keeping breakouts to a minimum. But, be careful not to damage the skin by over exfoliating, 1-2x per week is plenty.
Last tip. Don't feel overwhelmed. Just start with one or two then layer on. Before you know it they’ll be a staple part of your regimen all year long.
