Breakfast Smoothies: Three Quick and Delicious Post-Workout Meals

June 20, 2014

SmoothieBy Tracey Ferdinand (@ALifeWellMade) You just finished your morning run and you’ve got a small window of time to eat and get ready for work. Do you (A) Skip breakfast and just wait until lunch time since you’re not really hungry. (B) Grab a bagel, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich from Dunkin’ Donuts. Or (C) Call out of work so you can spend the morning preparing something decadent and delicious. Well skipping breakfast is never a good idea. It’s an especially bad one after a workout. Your muscles need to recover so a well-planned meal is crucial. Many runners agree that a post-workout liquid meal is better than solid food because it’s easier to digest. So ditch the egg and bagel. If you chose (C) keep in mind that preparing a post work out meal doesn’t have to be time consuming. Depending on the ingredients, smoothies are an excellent choice because they’re quick, nutritious, and on-the-go friendly. So here’s three smoothie ideas for a quick meal you can prepare in five minutes. The trick is to prepare what I like to call “smoothie packs” over the weekend. Prep all the fruit or kale ingredients and ice cubes for one smoothie into individual freezer bags. Store in your freezer for every day of the week. In the morning you can just throw everything into a blender. The three main ingredients are banana, a plant-based protein powder, and ice. If you prefer a sweeter smoothie add a little honey.     Strawberry Banana Smoothie   1/2 frozen banana ½ cup frozen organic strawberries ¾ cup of coconut milk 1 scoop plant-based protein powder 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed 3 ice cubes   Berry Nice Smoothie   1/2 frozen banana ½ cup frozen organic blueberries ½ cup frozen organic strawberries ¾ cup of coconut milk 1 scoop plant-based protein powder 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed 3 ice cubes   Peach Pineapple Smoothie   1/2 frozen banana ¾ cup of coconut milk 1 cup frozen peaches 1/2 cup frozen pineapple 1/2 cup frozen organic kale 1 scoop plant-based protein powder 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed 3 ice cubes Tracey Ferdinand is committed to effecting social change through personal health transformations by promoting physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing.  A self-love disciple, her writing encourages women of color to cultivate vibrant lives prioritizing self-care. Stop by her website at www.ALifeWellMade.com and visit her on instagram @ALifeWellMade.
