I have a few friends who are married with children and when we talk about exercise, I always hear, “Shana, I just don’t have the time. By the time I pick the kids up, cook dinner and get the kids to bed, I’m too exhausted.” I can only imagine. While I don’t have any children, it doesn’t mean my life is any less busy. I have a slew of other things that I do besides work, so I understand how hard it is to squeeze exercise into the equation. Having kids/family to take care of doesn’t have to make it impossible though. Here are a few tips for the busy mom.
Take the kids with you! To me the obvious choice would be to take the kids to the park or the trail with you and let them run amok while you do your thing on the yoga mat, jump rope, or resistance bands. They can let their hair down after school (while getting worn out simultaneously) and you can get your workout in at the same dang time! If you have an infant, I would suggest getting a jogger’s stroller. It looks like it’s very effective because the stroller is made so that you can run/jog/walk with the baby in tow. If this interest’s you, check them out online http://ow.ly/vuoyKWorkout while they’re sleeping. I’ve always heard that when you have children, when they sleep, you sleep. I agree with this sentiment but before you go to sleep, pop in the Insanity DVD and let Shaun T. make you sweat. If you don’t have access to any fitness DVDs, I would recommend checking out some workout routines online that you can do for twenty to thirty minutes. A few places that offer bodyweight workouts are http://ow.ly/vuoDC and http://ow.ly/vuoHO.
You can work out during lunch. If you’re a working mom, there’s a possibility that you could take a walk/workout during your lunch break. I’ve done this a few times and it can be done, though it takes considerable planning. You would have to pack your lunch, snack throughout your day, work out at the gym if it’s close by or go for a quick walk. I was able to do this because my gym, job, and house were within a two mile radius of each other. I was fortunate to have this but I know that this isn’t a reality for some.
You can work out while you watch T.V. While you’re at home getting prepared for the next day, you may take some time to wind down. While you’re getting caught up on Scandal, do your planks, crunches and pushups. It only takes a few minutes of your time and you don’t have to miss a minute of Fitz and Olivia.
