HOW DID YOU BEGIN YOUR RUNNING JOURNEY?

Jewel: I was introduced to BGR! in March of 2012, after being challenged to run a 5K by a co-worker.  It was the beginning of my amazing running  journey. The camaraderie and the motto "NO WOMEN LEFT BEHIND" left an incredible impression on me, as one of the sisters came back to run with me. I have since run several more 5K's and a half marathon. As I prepare for my first full marathon, I am encouraged to continue moving forward knowing there is always a BGR! sister with her hand out to pull me along. Nikaeda: I started running in the 11th grade when my best friend and I decided to join our high school’s newly formed girls’ cross country team.

What is your favorite post run meal?

Jewel: Omelet w/everything called a Rinky Dink Omelet Nikaeda: My favorite post run meal is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with chocolate soy milk.

What piece of running gear/gadget is a “must have” for your run?

Jewel: Garmin Road Runner 10 watch Nikaeda: It is snowy and bitter cold in Cleveland this time of year.  My must have apparel in this weather are my Brooks GTX which are waterproof trail shoes that keep my feet warm and dry in the snow and my Brooks winter running pants.

Why Do You LOVE BGR!?

Jewel:  I LOVE BGR!, because it is a platform for women to tap into their internal strengths through the encouragement and support of sisters on the same journey. To watch women transform their thoughts from, “I could NEVER attitude” to “I CAN/DID” is an incredible feeling. Nikaeda: I love BGR! because of the sisterhood.  I have never had so many close girlfriends and I love that the group debunks the myth that black women can’t get along and support each other.
