What Are Chia Seeds?

April 09, 2013

This superfood keeps you fuller longer, packed with essential nutrients

You’ve probably heard chia seeds mentioned more in recent years than you ever have. It seems they’re showing up in recipes everywhere — in morning smoothies, snack bars, jams and beverages.

So...what are they?

You likely first heard the term ‘chia’ in the early 80s when the Chia Pet gained popularity (Go on, you know you want to say, “Ch-ch-ch-chia!”).

The seed has come a long way since its initial use in America. Chia seeds — or salvia hispanica — were an important part in the ancient Mayan and Aztec diet. The word is literally derived from the Mayan meaning of “strength,” and the seeds are known to increase energy and stamina for long periods of time.

What makes chia seeds so healthy?

Today, this superfood is making a major comeback among nutritionists, fitness professionals and those looking to add more nutrients to their everyday meals. Here’s what makes chia seeds so awesome:

  • They’re packed with Omega-3 fatty acids. In fact, they’re the most concentrated source of Omega-3s than any food around, beating out a piece of salmon. Omega-3s help regulate various processes in the body, support heart health and give you vibrant skin, shiny hair and strong nails

  • You can eat them as they are — no grinding necessary to reap the full benefits

  • They’ve got nearly 11 grams of fiber per ounce, keeping you fuller longer and aiding in digestion

I want some right now! Where can I find them?

Drop by your local health food store or vitamin shop to purchase chia seeds. They’re gaining popularity so quickly, you might be lucky enough to find them in your grocery store!

Tried chia seeds before? We’d love to hear what you thought of them in the comments section below. And if you’ve got a recipe, by all means share!
