CONGRATS TOWANDA COFIELD!

We started off with 12 contestants, and now we are down to the TOP 1! On Sunday, September 16, 12012, thousands of Black Girls RUN! members and supporters will flood the streets of Atlanta, GA and take part in the Inaugural Black Girls RUN! Drive to End Hunger 5K/10K Race Presented by Coca-Cola. To kickoff the race, Black Girls RUN! hosted their first National Anthem Contest looking for one special person to sing the National Anthem before the gun goes off, and the runners/walkers hit the pavement. 12 contestants submitted their photos and videos to BGR! to try to win your vote! In the last week, we had almost 72k people vote! AMAZING! We are proud to announce that Towanda Cofield is the winner of our National Anthem contest! Towanda had a total of 30,384 votes! WOW! She will sing the National Anthem in Atlanta, GA on Sunday, September 16 at 7 a.m. in Atlantic Station, win a Black Girls RUN! shirt and be able to attend the BGR! Pre Race Pasta Dinner on Saturday, September 15, and participate in the Drive to End Hunger 5K/10K Race if they choose. CONGRATS TOWANDA! Contestant #11: Towanda Cofield Towanda Cofield, is a singer from Baltimore, Maryland. Her singing background includes performing the national anthem at local sports events, touring in Europe with various gospel groups, and participating in local music festivals. In 2005, she was featured on VH1’s Born to Diva competition which allowed her to sing among greats such as Stevie Wonder and the late Whitney Houston. Currently Towanda teaches at the Auburn School which is a school for children with Social Communication Deficits. Before relocating to Maryland in 2009, Towanda taught life skills at Girard College, a boarding school, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Towanda is currently working on her M.S. in Educational Studies at Johns Hopkins University specializing in school administration, autism, and other pervasive disorders. She received her B.A. from Temple University, majoring in communications and education. Towanda would be honored to sing for Black Girls Run, and organization that promotes the wellness of woman through fitness. Listen to Towanda.
