Eating a meal before a workout can weigh you down and make you feel sluggish, but then working out before a meal can make you feel empty and sluggish also. So what's better feeling sluggish or feeling sluggish? None of the above? Well have no fear.
One way to make sure you are still energized and not too full when working out is to eat something healthy like a banana or an apple before your workout. These fruits are full of potassium and provide you with the right amount of energy to get you jump started with a run or walk in the mornings. It's ideal to be able to eat a great meal before and after a workout, but knowing what to eat is the key.
Surprisingly protein shakes and bars aren't always the best things to eat pre-sweat along with pastas and veggie salads. "While protein is an important fuel source and aids muscle recovery, it can be a double-edged sword: Some pre-workout bars and shakes pack high amounts of protein but omit sufficient carbs, and can thus deplete energy levels," says Manuel Villacorta, a dietician for the American Dietetic Association.
So instead of grabbing something that's packed in a plastic wrapper or bottle grab something that you and your body enjoys like a banana, apple, or you could snag a few grapes from the fridge. We don't want you to get burned out within the first 10 minutes of your workout.
