BGR! Eats: Smoothies

August 07, 2012

@toni_carey/@blackgirlsrun When it comes to breakfast options, I'm a pretty hard girl to please. As my least favorite meal of the day, I typically go for a cup of coffee, toast and call it a day. But on a quest for more energy to crank out my hectic life and workout schedule, breakfast has been my way of setting the eating tone for the day. I was introduced to the idea of juicing and smoothie-making a while ago, but I've been on a total smoothie kick as of late, and for good reasons. 1.) Total Time Saver: It's super easy! On mornings I'm still bleery eyed and half-awake it's a brainless way to get my morning started off right. 2.) Vitamins and Nutrients the Natural Way: We all know that the best way to get your vitamins and nutrients are from FOOD! I'd love to think, I eat right 100% of the time, but let's be honest. It's tough. I prefer to drink my fruits and veggies rather than eat them. 3.) Variety and Creativity: I consider smoothie making my little quest to becoming a chef. Not really, but it makes me uber proud that i can come up with something delicious and orginial on the fly!  I tend not to measure or follow recipes so each smoothie is a suprise. It also give me good reason to use fruits and veggies before they spoil. 4.) Nature's Remedy: I'm a firm believer that nature can be the cure for many ailments, including digestion issues (clears throat). Mix and match veggies, herbs and even spices as a natural healing aid. There's tons of GREAT sites out there to get you started. A few of my favorites are:
  • The Green Smoothie Guy
  • Smoothie Web
  • Whole Living Magazine
But beware of big box smoothie chains. There's tons of added sugar is those generous servings! Opt for making your own. Here's one of my originals to get you started!

Blue Agave Mango Smoothie

Blend the following:

  • 1/2 cup frozen mangos
  • 1/4 bananas
  • 1/3 Greek Yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons Organic Raw Blue Agave Nectar
  • 1 1/2 cups of water
Approximately 96 calories for two servings.
