More and more women are overworked, overwhelmed and overwrought. And I'm one of them. Thanksgiving and the full-on holiday season are right around the corner and I'm guilty of not being able to properly manage stress. Just ask Ashley. But I'm not alone. In fact, according to the American Psychological Association, 70% of women beeline for fast-acting, unhealthy stress solutions. Women’s Health suggests three healthy fixes to help you manage a high-anxiety lifestyle.
1. Resist the urge to reach for an unhealthy snack:
And grab a handful of almonds. The omega-3s in nuts may help keep stress hormones, such as cortisone, in check. Other key angst-nulling noshes include oatmeal, which boosts the calming brain chemical serotonin, and oranges because vitamin C counters stress hormones.
2. Don’t swig that energy drink:
Instead, spend 15 minutes in silence. When surrounded by silence, the brain doesn’t have to filter out stressful sounds. Also, a 20 minute nap is enough to trigger the hormones needed to balance excess cortisol, the hormone released in response to stress.
3. Keep cool when you’re tempted to snap at a co-worker:
By popping a multi-vitamin. When stressed, your body’s levels of calcium, copper and zinc are low. A multi-vitamin helps boost these nutrients allowing you to mellow out.
