September is National Yoga Month, a national observance designated by the Department of Health and Human Services. The observance was created to build awareness of yoga's proven health benefits and inspire youths and adults to take responsibility for their well-being by focusing on prevention and healthy lifestyle choices.
I've always been a fan of yoga. I started practicing about the same I started running as a way to help me stretch out after running and increase my flexibility. But I was also practicing for the psychological benefits. I was going through a really rough patch and yoga helped me to decrease my anxiety, give me focus and provide clarity.
It's not secret that yoga can do wonders for runners. Not only does it help improve strength, it also helps runners become less injury prone. A few year's ago Runner's World published an article to help runner's incorporate yoga into their workout routine. I've also blogged about some of my favorite yoga poses.
One of the great things about National Yoga Month is many yoga studios offer free classes to honor yoga.
One of my favorite events is hosted by lululemon athletica, one of my favorite stores for yoga and running gear, called Salutation Nation. Salutation nation is an annual international day of yoga with complimentary yoga classes led by local yoga ambassadors.
This morning I joined luluemon athletica Virginia Beach for an hour of practice beach-side. More than 200 yogis attended and we couldn't have asked for more beautiful weather.
If you've never practiced yoga on the beach, but it on your bucket list. The waves crashing along the shore serve as the perfect soundtrack and balancing yourself on sand makes it a little more intense than if you were practicing in a studio.
