A wardrobe stylist recently posted on Twitter that Michelle Obama is the only woman that should be allowed to wear kitten heels. As a runner and owner of several pairs of kitten heels, I was somewhat offended. But not just because I own several pairs, but because as a I runner, my knees can't handle wearing the pumps I used to wear. And let's face it, heels, pumps, stilettos, aren't the best for your knees or back ladies.
So I had to ask her, "Since kitten heels should only be worn by Michelle, what does that leave me?" Because I refuse to be that lady wearing a suit with running shoes. Her response was "ballet flats". Although ballet flats are coming back hot and heavy, they can be a bit boring. But here's some fashionable alternatives that will keep you and your knees happy.
Steve Madden "Trouser" ($69.95)
I just added these to my shoe collection and I absolutely love them. I can rock them to work or after hours. They are super comfy and give me the funky edge I'm looking for. Oxfords are totally in, but it may take some extra effort to rock them just right!
TOMS "Glitters" ($54)
TOMS is one of my all-time favorite brands. Not only do they have an awesome movement (they match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes to a child in need. One for One.), but they also carry some very stylish and comfortable footwear. If you're looking for something a little more jazzy, these are it.You can practically wear these with anything.
Kate Spade Hula Too ($225)
There's a lot of great things about summer, one of which is sandals! I'm a huge fan of Kate's whimsical and chic designs and these sandals are on my shoe wish list. I'm loving the bright pink with a touch of sparkle on top. Perfect for a night on the town beach-side.
daniblack Preston ($155)
I came across these at Zappos, and quickly started counting my coins and making plans for a garage sale to cop these. Chic. Feminine. Modern. Sold!
Anthropologie Emerald Isle Wedges ($178)
If you know anything about me, you know that I have a slight love affair with all things Anthropologie. (I even did a photoshoot for their catalog when I lived in New Jersey. Oh the good days!) Green is my favorite color, so when I came across the wedges, I put them on my must have list. While they are flats, wedges do help distribute your weight, so they aren't completely off limits. I wouldn't wear them every day, but wedgies on the weekend shouldn't upset the knees too much. Just don't try to be superwoman and over do it.
