Fuel for Running: The Breakfast of Champions

June 16, 2009

Breakfast of champions takes on a whole new meaning when you are too old to care who is on the front of the Wheaties box. It is not only the most important meal of the day, but in many ways the fuel you need to keep you fuller throughout the day, give you energy and aid in weight loss. It is important to eat a breakfast that is high in PROTEIN. Here are a few options.

Breakfast foods with protein:
Egg whites
Peanut butter on a whole grain English muffin
Turkey bacon (or any lean meat)
low-fat milk
*Be sure to pair your protein with complex carbohydrates such as whole grains.

If you are like me, you don't always have time to cook breakfast. Here are a few of my favorite on the go breakfast options.

1. Amy's Breakfast Burrito - I usually don't advocate any microwave meals, but Amy's products are organic, vegetarian, non-dairy and cholesterol free. At 250 calories, it is a filling and healthy option.

2. Egg White Turkey Sausage Flatbread Sandwich from Dunkin Doughnuts - I REALLY like Dunkin Doughnuts coffee, so this is a good low-cal, high protein option when I need to stop and grab a cup of Joe and breakfast. One sandwich is 280 calories.

Lastly, I keep healthy breakfast options stashed in my office desk and in my refrigerator at work. I usually have yogurt, peanut butter, string cheese and cereal. Having these foods around saves me time in the morning and gives me no excuse not to eat the most important meal of the day.
